SURREY HILLS
SYLVA

Set within the secluded woodland of a private Surrey Hills estate, this contemporary pavilion is conceived as a quiet architectural retreat, immersed in the natural landscape.

The design is defined by a slender horizontal roof plane, expansive glazing and a restrained palette of natural materials. Deep overhangs, delicate structural elements and carefully positioned timber screens create a sense of lightness, allowing the building to sit discreetly amongst the mature trees. The use of a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) along with a carefully orchestrated positioning of the screw piles ensured no existing tree roots were damaged.

The pavilion blurs the boundaries between inside and out, with interconnected living spaces opening onto sheltered terraces and the surrounding woodland. Natural timber, textured masonry and carefully framed views bring warmth and intimacy to the otherwise minimal architectural composition.

A sensitive landscape strategy preserves the woodland character, incorporating native planting, ferns and natural groundcover to establish a seamless transition between architecture and nature.

The result is a refined, understated building that celebrates the tranquillity and distinctive character of its Surrey Hills setting.
