MALLTRAETH SANDS
ANGLESEA
This new build family home on this stunning, remote site in Anglesey, directly overlooking the Afon Cefni Estuary and the spectacular Snowdonia peaks beyond.
This 4-bedroom house was a replacement for a much-loved family bungalow. The bungalow typology set the precedence for a single storey building; the very tight budget and the extreme exposure of the site also had a significant to play in the design and construction process.
The linear formation of the bedrooms ensure every habitable room in the house takes full advantage of the far fetching views across the water and landscape beyond. The large open plan Kitchen, Diner, Living and Mezzanine level above, all capitalise on the fully glazed gable end, enabling uninterrupted views for all communal living spaces out over the sea and beyond to the National Park peaks of Snowdonia.
Given the site’s extremely exposed situation, the performance/effectiveness of the detailing, material choice and construction method all had to be carefully considered. SIP (Structural Insulated Panels) were used to help mitigate the risk of potential delays caused by the weather. This enabled the entire insulated structure to go up uninterrupted in 10 days. The choice of SIPs proved to be a particularly prudent decision as hurricane Ophelia hit in force days after its completion.
The adopted passive strategies of solar gains and cross ventilation work well in this home. An airtight/highly insulated SIPs, in conjunction with an air source heat pump, UFH (under floor heating) and the high specification of the external openings ensured this was a highly sustainable build.
